Key Capabilities

How It Works

The addon works by scanning your site’s code and database to identify translatable “strings.”

1. The Scanning Process

Instead of manually hunting through PHP files, you can go to WPML → Theme and plugins localization. From there, you select your theme or specific plugins and click “Scan selected plugins for strings.” WPML will then index every translatable piece of text it finds.

2. Finding & Translating

Once scanned, you navigate to WPML → String Translation.

  • Filters: You can filter by “Domain” (e.g., your theme name, WooCommerce, etc.) to narrow down the list.

  • The Translation Table: You’ll see the original string and a “+” icon for each language you’ve enabled.

  • Search: Use the search bar to find specific words like “Copyright” or “Cart” that you need to change immediately.

3. “Not Seeing the String?” (Admin Texts)

Some texts are stored in the WordPress wp_options table (like your logo URL or footer text). These don’t show up in a regular scan.

  • At the bottom of the String Translation page, there is a link: “Translate texts in admin screens.” * This takes you to a deep-dive list where you can check off specific options to “register” them for translation.
