In this stack, the responsibilities are divided to prevent “plugin bloat” in any one area:
MemberPress (The Gatekeeper): Manages subscriptions, recurring billing (Stripe/PayPal), and Access Rules. You use MemberPress to protect the specific WordPress Pages or Posts where your Sensei courses live.
Sensei LMS (The Teacher): Manages the course structure (Modules/Lessons), quizzes, student progress tracking, and certificates.
The Bridge: MemberPress typically protects the “Course” or “Lesson” custom post types. When a user’s subscription expires in MemberPress, they automatically lose access to the Sensei content.
To run this combination smoothly, your server and WordPress install should meet these minimums:
WordPress: Version 6.0 or higher.
PHP: 7.4 or higher (8.1+ recommended for performance).
Database: MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.3+.
MemberPress License: Basic, Plus, or Pro (all support basic integration).
Sensei Version: Sensei LMS (Free) works for the core, but Sensei Pro is often used if you want advanced interactive blocks or file attachments.
MemberPress has its own built-in “Courses” add-on, so why use Sensei?
Academic Depth: Sensei offers more complex quiz types and grading systems.
WooCommerce Pedigree: If you are already using WooCommerce, Sensei (built by Automattic) has native “WooCommerce Paid Courses” integration that is hard to beat.
Interactive Elements: Sensei includes “Interactive Blocks” (Flashcards, Image Hotspots) that MemberPress’s native builder currently lacks.
